In short
Business mobile phone plans come in a few types: voice plans for phones, data-only plans for tablets, laptops and routers, shared data across a team, and unlimited data. Add-ons cover roaming and extra services, and spend caps limit charges beyond the plan. The right mix depends on how each person works, and we focus on getting that airtime cost down.

Types of business mobile plan
Most business accounts mix several plan types. Here is what each is for:
| Plan type | What it includes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Voice plan | Calls, texts and data on a SIM or eSIM | Staff phones, new or already owned |
| Data-only / mobile broadband | Data with no calls, on a SIM, eSIM or hotspot | Tablets, laptops, routers and devices |
| Shared or pooled data | One data allowance shared across several lines | Teams whose usage varies from person to person |
| Unlimited data | Data without a monthly cap, subject to the network's fair use rules | Heavy users and people who hotspot laptops |
| Roaming add-ons | Use of the plan abroad on the network's terms | Staff who travel for work |
For SIM only plans, see our sister site for business SIM only plans. The rest of this page explains the choices that matter when you combine these.

Airtime and phones, kept separate
We focus on the airtime: the right plan for each line at the right cost. With the plans kept separate from the phones, companies can buy their mobile phones outright or through their usual procurement, which can save them a lot of money and gives them the flexibility to refresh devices when they choose. Phones that still have years of security updates left stay in use, and new starters get the phone that suits their role.
Our business mobile phone contracts guide explains how airtime contracts work, and mobile phones for business helps you choose the phones.
Data-only plans and mobile broadband
Data-only plans connect devices that do not need calls. A data SIM or eSIM in a tablet or laptop, a portable hotspot for a small team, a router in a van or on a construction site, or a card terminal at a market stall all run on data-only plans.
See mobile broadband for business for portable options, business data SIMs for devices, and 5G business broadband if you need a fixed connection for premises without fibre.

Shared data, unlimited and how to size data per user
Sizing data well avoids paying for data nobody uses and stops people running out. Rather than guess, use evidence:
- Pull the last few months of usage for each line from your current network's account tool or bills.
- Group people by how they work: office-based on Wi-Fi most of the day, mobile and on the road, or heavy users who stream video or hotspot a laptop.
- Match each group to a plan, or put variable users on shared data where the network offers it.
- Give people who hotspot laptops a plan that suits it, or a separate data SIM for the laptop.
- Review after a few months and move people between plans within the network's rules.
Unlimited data plans remove the worry of running out but are subject to each network's fair use policy, and they may not be the most cost-effective choice for people who sit on Wi-Fi all day. Shared data can work well when a few heavy users balance out many light ones.
Matching plans to roles
A practical way to build a plan mix is to start from roles rather than products. These are typical patterns, not rules:
| Role | Usually needs | Plan approach to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Office-based staff on Wi-Fi | Calls, messaging, light data away from the desk | A smaller voice plan, or shared data |
| Sales and field staff | Maps, video calls and email on the move | A larger data plan with roaming if they travel |
| Engineers and trades | Good coverage across a wide area, tough devices | A voice plan on the network with the strongest signal on their routes |
| Managers who hotspot laptops | Heavy data use | Unlimited data, or a separate data SIM for the laptop |
| Tablets and laptops | Data only | Data-only plans or eSIM |
| Routers, terminals and cameras | Steady, often low data | Data-only SIMs, managed together |
Real usage data should take priority over assumptions, so check bills before finalising the mix.
Plan mistakes that cost money
Overspending on business mobile plans often comes from a few habits:
- Everyone on the same plan: convenient, but light users pay for data they do not use and heavy users run out
- Plans chosen years ago: usage changes, and plans that once fitted may no longer
- Lines nobody uses: SIMs belonging to leavers or replaced devices that keep billing
- No roaming controls: staff travel without the right add-on or spend cap
- Paying for features twice: for example, a device management service from the network and a separate tool your IT team already runs
A review against your actual usage is the simplest fix. We can help you run one before you renew or switch.
Spend caps, bars and roaming add-ons
Business spend caps let you set a limit on charges beyond the plan, with alerts as users approach it, and networks let you bar premium-rate or international numbers. Some networks add further bill controls, so ask which ones apply to the plans you are considering.
Roaming works differently on each network: some include certain destinations in the plan, others use daily passes or add-ons, and fair use rules apply. Our business roaming guide explains how it works. Rates for plans supplied through us are confirmed at quote.
5G access and plan features
Many business plans now include access to 5G where the device supports it and there is coverage. Some networks also run 5G Standalone (the networks that offer it describe their own versions on their sites), which needs a compatible phone and an eligible plan. Our 5G for business guide explains what 5G Standalone changes.
Other features to check on a plan include Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM support, voicemail, visual voicemail and whether the plan works with services such as Microsoft Teams Phone Mobile, which Forever Group covers on cloudphone.cloud.

Frequently asked questions
What is a business mobile phone plan?
It is the set of calls, texts, data and services a business mobile line can use each month, on a business account. Plans cover voice lines for phones and data-only lines for tablets, laptops and routers.
How much data does a business user need?
It varies widely. The best guide is each person's actual usage over the last few months, which your current network's account tool or bills will show. Group users by how they work and match plans to each group.
Is unlimited data worth it for business?
It suits heavy users and people who hotspot laptops. For staff who are on Wi-Fi most of the day, a smaller plan or shared data can be better value. Unlimited plans are subject to each network's fair use policy.
Can business lines share data?
Some networks let lines on a business account share or pool data. It can suit teams where a few heavy users are balanced by many light ones. We can tell you which plans offer it.
Do business mobile plans include 5G?
Many business plans now include 5G access where the device supports it and there is coverage. 5G Standalone, where a network offers it, needs a compatible phone and an eligible plan. We confirm what each plan includes at quote.
